Baghdad, 8 February 2013 – To mark the World Interfaith Harmony Week (1-7 February), United Nations envoy Mr. Martin Kobler and a UN delegation participated in a series of visits to several holy places, including the shrine of Imam Hanifa Al-Aadham, Imam Khadum Shrine, Sayyidat Al-Najat Church and the temple of the Sabean Mandeans.

Casting a vote in the ballot box is among the most important gestures that a citizen of voting age can make in a democratic country. In Iraq, citizens are being called to the polls for the Governorate Council Elections on 20 April 2013.

Since August 2010 the UNFPA Iraq Country Office has been supporting nine staff of the Iraqi Central Statistical Organization (CSO) and Kurdistan Regional Statistical Office (KRSO) to get their Master’s and PhD degrees in Demography and Statistics from the Institute of Statistical Studies and Research (ISSR) of Cairo University in Egypt. The programme they were enrolled in consisted of two to four years of study.

 When Iraqis arrive to vote in Governorate Council Elections on 20 April, they will receive ballot papers that list coalitions and political entities by name, by symbol, and by number. In this way, voters will have three different options to identify their choice of candidate. This 3-way identification system is a common practice in many countries. It helps to ensure that all numeracy and literacy levels are catered for, and that all eligible voters can actively participate.

Baghdad- The World Health Organization completed the first step of assessing alternate means of health financing in Iraq based on social health protection.
Health financing is a key area identified for modernization of the health sector in Iraq. The Government has expressed a willingness to engage in a dialogue with the aim of making the Iraqi health system more efficient and equitable based on a social health protection model.

As part of its support to the Council of Representatives (CoR), the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with support from the Inter-Agency Information and Analysis Unit (IAU), conducted a workshop on survey questionnaire design for 24 researchers from the CoR Research Directorate. The training was held at the Council of Representatives in Baghdad on 23 – 27 December 2012.

On 22-23 December, as part of its celebrations to mark the International Day for Persons with Disabilities, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq, together with the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR), the Iraqi Parliamentary Committee for Human Rights and the NGO, the Iraqi Alliance for Disabilities Organization (IADO), organized a conference to discuss recommendations on how to implement the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in Iraq.

Like many others in Iraq and around the world, I was inspired by the performance of Iraqi athletes at the Paralympics in London this summer. Women and men from across the country competed against the strongest, fastest, smartest and most enduring among the world’s disabled athletes, and more than held their own, bringing home two silver medals and one bronze. Official honours were bestowed on them in Iraq, validating their great determination and positive spirit in overcoming the odds imposed on them by their disabilities.

Human Rights Day is always one of the most important observances on the calendar of official events for the United Nations family. The commemoration marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948, the historical document that declared for the first time that human rights are universal, and inherent to each and every human being. كوردی
