Thank you for inviting the United Nations to brief this ‘Small Group of the Global Coalition to Counter ISIL’ on current developments in Iraq, including the dire humanitarian situation there.

Ladies and gentlemen,

Iraq has a rich heritage almost unparalleled in age and variety. Sumerian, Assyro-Babylonian, Hellenistic, Achaimenid, Christian and Islamic heritage with the latter segmented into Abbassid, Mongol and Ottoman layers provide a unique amalgam.

Among nations with similarly long histories only China, India, Egypt, Iran and Greece possess a comparable endowment.

This cultural heritage translates into a host of achievements clearly identified first with ancient Mesopotamia (the wheel, writing, mathematics, astronomy, temple
