WFP: Taking swift action to help Iraq's Displaced Populations

Iraq - As winter temperatures set in across Iraq, IOM is distributing fuel for use in kerosene heaters to vulnerable refugees, internally displaced people (IDPs) and host communities. These people, many of whom are facing long-term or multiple displacements and hardship, are often unable to afford the fuel needed to keep themselves warm.

Baghdad, 6 December 2015 - The first heavy winter snows began in Sulaymaniyah, in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KR-I) today, as staff from the UN refugee agency, UNHCR, monitored camps where some of the most vulnerable families have received winter help.

BAGHDAD 26 November 2015 - The humanitarian situation of Iraqis displaced in the Kurdistan region of Iraq is worsening due to limited access to jobs and economic opportunities, according to an assessment conducted by the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), The Food Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the REACH Initiative which fights child hunger and undernutrition.

Iraq, 20 November 2015 - The IOM Iraq Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM), published on 19 November, identified 3,181,176 internally displaced Iraqis (530,196 families) from 1 January 2014 through 5 November 2015.

ERBIL, 17 November 2015 – Building on Japan’s continuing support to the government and people of Iraq, twenty fully-equipped paramedic ambulances were handed over to the Kurdistan Regional Government’s Bureau for Migration and Displacement (BMD) in a ceremony today at the Baharka Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) Camp in Erbil, Iraq. The ambulances are being provided as part of the project “Increasing Access to Emergency Response Services for IDPs and Refugees in the Kurdistan Region”, implemented by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) on behalf of the Government of Japan and in partnership with BMD. The project aims to support the BMD in providing emergency medical services to IDPs and refugees residing in three Iraqi governorates – Erbil, Sulaymaniyah, and Kirkuk.
