Humanitarian conditions in Iraq continue to deteriorate and 5.2 million people are now in need of assistance throughout the country.

Thank you, Mr. President,

Let me begin by presenting the Secretary-General’s report pursuant to paragraph 6 of resolution 2169 (2014) on the activities of UNAMI and the most recent develop-ments in Iraq. 

I am honoured to be joined today by Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Af-fairs Ms Valerie Amos and the High Commissioner for Human Rights Mr. Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein.

Baghdad, 25 September 2014 – The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General today welcomed the unanimous adoption by the Security Council of Resolution 2178 (2014), condemning violent extremism and requiring States to work together by implementing laws and policies to prevent travel, and support for foreign terrorist fighters. 

The Security Council welcomes the newly formed Government of Iraq and calls on the international community to support its efforts to strengthen further democratic institutions, to maintain security and combat terrorism and to create a safe, stable and prosperous future for the people of Iraq. The Security Council reaffirms its support for the independence, sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity of Iraq and reaffirms further the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations.

It is an honour, indeed, to brief the Security Council today on behalf of the Secretary-General.

This is the 4th time that I address the Council on the devastation from the people of Iraq by the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

The Security Council deplores in the strongest terms the recent events in the cities of Ramadi and Fallujah in Anbar province in haq. The Security Council condenms the attacks that are being peq?etrated by A1-Qaida affiliate, the Islalnic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), against the people of Iraq in an attempt to destabilize the country and region. The Security Council recognizes that Iraqi security forces, local police and tribes in Anbar province are showing gTeat courage as they fight to defeat ISIL in their cities.
