29 October, 2016, Iraq - UN Women has joined partners in providing emergency assistance in camps and host communities impacted by the Mosul operations. Since the Mosul operations began on 17 October 2016, the humanitarian crisis has deepened, with more than 15,000 individuals displaced and an anticipated 1.2 million expected as the operations continue.

Baghdad, Iraq, 29 October 2016 – At a conference in Baghdad on violence against women, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General (SRSG) for Iraq Ján Kubiš said the United Nations continues to stand in solidarity with the female victims of Daesh crimes and insists on full accountability for atrocities perpetrated by the terrorist group. He called for the adoption of the Family Protection bill by the Iraqi parliament and urged that women be part of the post-Daesh political, stabilization and reconstruction efforts.

Baghdad, 27 October 2016 – On the 16th anniversary of United Nations Security Council resolution 1325, a high level conference was held in Baghdad that primarily assessed progress made towards implementing the Iraqi National Action Plan on 1325.

ERBIL, 25 October, 2016— As Iraqi civilians are fleeing the ongoing conflict in Mosul, UNFPA Iraq has stepped up its response and delivered reproductive health (RH) services to women and girls in Iraq.

Protection of Women and Girls in Mosul

Statement by Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin, United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UNFPA, to the United Nations Population Fund, on the Protection of Women and Girls in Mosul

Baghdad, 05 October 2015 – UNAMI today held an Open Forum on UN Security Council Resolution (SCR) 1325 with Iraqi women leaders and civil society representatives to assess progress and identify ways to better accelerate action on implementing UN Security Council Resolution 1325.

Iraq - The International Organization for Migration (IOM) yesterday (21/09) facilitated the relocation of 65 women and children from Dohuk to Erbil to Baden-Württemberg, Germany. These beneficiaries are taking part in the German-funded Humanitarian Admissions Programme, which with support from IOM, seeks to facilitate the safe and orderly movement of vulnerable survivors of the Iraq conflict to Germany.

Erbil, 28th January 2015: The United Nations Humanitarian community concluded 2-day training with local NGO partners and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), primarily women’s groups working in central and south Iraq. The training titled, ‘Protection and Gender Mainstreaming in Humanitarian Action: Strengthening Response’ was the first initiative of its kind aimed at strengthening partnerships between civil society groups in responding to the specific needs of internally displaced women, girls, boys and men.

Baghdad, 26 November 2014 – At the launch of the ‘16 Days of Activism against Gender-based Violence’ between 25 November and 10 December, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq (SRSG), Mr. Nickolay Mladenov said “My wholehearted thoughts go on that day particularly to the hundreds of abducted women and girls who are suffering unspeakable abuses and atrocities by terrorist groups”.  “They are Iraq’s bleeding wound”, he acknowledged, committing to the United Nations’ continued advocacy to obtain their release and to support the Government of Iraq’s in its efforts to bring them back home.
