Baghdad, 27 August 2019 - As part of its work on enhancing equality and countering discrimination, in particular in relation to ethnic and religious minorities, the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) through its Human Rights Office in United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) held a national short film competition and festival on Minorities and Human Rights in Iraq, and from March to August 2019 held 36 short film festival events.

Baghdad, Iraq, 26 August 2019 – Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General, Alice Walpole, yesterday addressed the launch of a Regional Forum aimed at advancing women’s rights in Iraq and across the Middle Eastern region, with participants from Iraq, Algeria, Bahrain, Egypt, Jordan, Lebanon, Morocco, Palestine, Tunisia and Yemen. The forum is being held under the auspices of the President of the Republic of Iraq, with support from the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI), UN Women, the Women’s International League for Peace and the Dutch Embassy.

I am honoured to be speaking at the opening of this Forum for the Advancement of Women. And I am delighted to see Iraqi women and Iraqi institutions and organisations at the centre of this exciting initiative, striving not just for women’s equality and advancement in their own country, but reaching out to their counterparts, colleagues and friends across the region to share experiences, build solidarity and work together towards important goals of inclusivity and equality.

2 August 2019 Baghdad – Across Iraq, the instability and insecurity caused by years of conflict have left an environment where trafficking in persons (TIP) is a constant and real threat. It occurs in peacetime and is exacerbated during conflict and post-crises. Approximately 1.6 million people in Iraq are internally displaced. The 2019 Humanitarian Response Plan estimates that 6.7 million people are still in need of humanitarian assistance.

Baghdad, 1 August 2019 – The Ministry of Planning and the United Nations signed today a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish the Iraq Reconstruction and Recovery Trust Fund in support of the Government’s Recovery and Development Framework.

Baghdad, 1 August 2019 – Recalling the suffering of the Yazidis on the fifth anniversary of ISIL’s onslaught on Sinjar District, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Iraq, Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, lamented the current failure to bring about stability in the area. Stressing that stability is crucial for the stricken community to return home and rebuild its life, she called on Baghdad and Erbil to urgently find solutions that put the needs of the people first.

Cairo, Egypt, 23 July 2019 – I recently concluded a four-day visit to Iraq where I saw firsthand a health system transitioning from emergency response to reconstruction, rehabilitation, and resilience, while at the same time addressing the health needs of millions of vulnerable Iraqis and refugees.
